It’s no mystery why this song won Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards! It teaches us to embrace our uniqueness and scars. There are cruel people in the world who view different as obscure. “This is Me,” is all about self-love, empowerment and growth. It’s easy to allow what we believe is a deformity to control our emotions, which stifles our ability to be fearless as we achieve our dreams. The premise of this track is about recognizing that despite our imperfections and scars, we are yet beautiful and conquerors! This week kick-started with a, “Day of Service,” as we commemorated the legacy of a prolific leader who fought the hatred of this world with love so that people of color, like myself, would have equal rights and liberties in this country. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. understood that love unifies our differences. It is unfortunate that in 2018, we are still confronted with some of the same opposition and bigotry that my predecessors experienced in the past. As we educate those who view difference as an inferiority, we must remember the legacy of Dr. King. Kill hatred with love and use our bruised spirits as an opportunity to educate and inspire positivity, just as “This is Me” so gracefully exclaimed! Operating in spite of our bruises, scars and uniqueness promotes healing for ourselves and others experiencing the same thing! Being unapologetically you is both liberating and inspiring!
